Invitation To MITMUNC 2010
Dear Delegates and Faculty Advisors,
It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the second annual Massachusetts Institute of Technology Model United Nations Conference (MITMUNC) on February 5-7, 2010.
MITMUNC is an innovative and unique high school Model United Nations conference, focusing on committees that have a scientific and/or technological foundation. The high school students attending do not have to be science experts - rather, our goal is to have our chairs use their expertise to make the scientific issues accessible to the students, so that the students can debate the policy issues with a better understanding of the facts behind them. MIT has long championed the intersection of academic knowledge and practical skills, and we bring that same spirit to our conference.
In their committees, students will use their academic understanding of the issues at hand to engage in collaborative and practical problem-solving. Last year, our committees included the UN Security Council, UN Development Program, and the IAEA. Small committee sizes across the board will encourage every student to get involved in the process.
Last year’s conference was a major success. Debate ranged from creating an international nuclear fuel bank to the situation on the Gaza Strip, as top notch students challenged one another’s positions and considered the ramifications of their joint actions. Working papers turned into resolutions, as everyone strove for complete solutions to the complex problems their committees were facing.
Though this conference is only in its second year, the staff is very experienced. Many of our Secretariat members and chairs have Model United Nations experience on the high school and college levels and from both MITMUNC and the Boston Invitational Model United Nations Conference, which MIT co-hosted until 2008. We’re also very excited about the flexibility that comes with a newer conference and can’t wait for you to see what we have in store.
Early Registration for the conference ends on November 1, 2009. The deadline for Regular Registration is December 1, 2009. Late registrations will be accepted through January 1, 2010.
